Activate my NUTS!?

Do you like eating nuts? Especially well… Peanut Butter! Let me at the jar with a spoon and I’m unstoppable. I like to make my own nut butters, so I know exactly what’s going in them. However, there is a new hype around ‘activating nuts’ these days to get the most nutritional content out of these babies.

The activation process involves soaking raw nuts for up to 12-24 hours in water and salt at room temperature. These nuts are then drained and dried at low temperatures. The reason for doing this is to start a ‘germination’ process. A compound called ‘phytic acid’ is found in nuts and actually acts as a ‘blocker’ of mineral absorption in the body. It can also cause digestive upset in some people. So, soaking our nuts makes it much easier for our bodies to break down the food source and absorb all the fantastic nutrients these ‘power house snacks’ have to offer. Bring on the homemade ‘Activated Peanut Butter!’
